MORGANTOWN — WVU volunteer assistant baseball coach Cody Atkinson and director of baseball operations Ryan Tuntland are joining former Mountaineers pitching coach Derek Matlock’s staff at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).
Matlock announced the hires on his Twitter account over the weekend.
Matlock was introduced as UTRGV’s head coach June 10. He spent five seasons on WVU head coach Randy Mazey’s staff as pitching coach/recruiting coordinator.
This season marked Atkinson’s first on Mazey’s staff. He was associate head coach/recruiting coordinator at Everett (Wash.) Community College for four seasons before coming to WVU.
Tuntland played one year at WVU under Mazey before being drafted by the San Francisco Giants.
He returned to WVU as a student assistant coach in 2016 before becoming director of baseball operations.
