ELKINS — Makenzie Friend scored 21 points and became the first Preston High girls’ basketball player to score 1,000 career points with the Knights in a 55-38 victory over Elkins, on Dec. 15.
Friend also grabbed 12 rebounds. Teammate Kirsten Brown tallied a double-double as well, with 18 points and 10 boards.
Taylor Maynard paced Elkins (5-1) with 12 points.
PHS coach Brian Miller said the Knights used their depth to seize command of the game in the second half.
“We felt we were deeper than them,” Miller said. “Every couple of minutes we switched guards and changed lineups.
“They were seven-deep. We played 11 people and kept rotating them in the second half and wore them down. Everybody did their roles. It was a good team win.”
The Knights are back in action Dec. 16, hosting Grafton at 3:30 p.m.
Preston’s junior varsity team (3-0) prevailed, 37-27, behind 19 points from Michelle Thomas.
