Roy Stanley

Roy H. Stanley, 98, of Morgantown and formerly of Charleston, and Columbus, Ohio, passed away Wednesday morning, June 19, 2024, at Harmony of Morgantown.

He was born April 21, 1926, in Charleston, a son of the late Alphonso and Clarabell Koontz Stanley.

Roy was a graduate of Dupont High School with the class of 1943. He entered the U.S. Army and served until July 1944 in the European Theatre. After the war, he met and married his wife, Mary Frances Lewis Stanley, who preceded him in death on Feb. 14, 2022, after 75 years of marriage.

Roy worked as a surveyor for Field Engineering in Charleston while attending both West Virginia State and Morris Harvey College at night for seven years, all in order to pass the West Virginia Civil Engineering Exam — which he did in 1962. In 1968, he moved his family to Columbus, Ohio, where Roy was an engineer with Burgess and Niple Co., until his retirement in 1992. After retirement, Roy moved in 2007 to be near his family.

Survivors include his children, Chas Stanley (Anita) of Morgantown, Cheryl Dinan (Russ) of Weaverville, N.C., and Roy A. Stanley of Sarsota, Fla.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Yahya of Wichita, Kan.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Aileen Cordell.

At the request of the family, Roy will be cremated. No public services are scheduled.

The family of Roy and Mary Stanley would like to thank all of the staff at Harmony of Morgantown for the excellent care provided to them both during their time there.
