Marie Gutta

Agnes Marie Gutta, 88, of Morgantown, peacefully joined her beloved husband in eternal rest on Saturday, April 20, 2024, surrounded by her family.

She was born July 25, 1935, a daughter of the late Edward and Agnes Bartylla Dawson.

Marie received her nursing degree from the St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Clarksburg and worked for many years at St. Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Morgantown.

Marie married the love of her life, Carmen, on June 3, 1957, and together they created a beautiful family. She was a devoted wife and cherished mother to their two sons, Carmen Jr. and Scott. During their 66 years of marriage, she and Carmen created a home filled with warmth, laughter and endless love (and coffee). Carmen and Marie were soulmates. Five months after bidding farewell to her adored husband, Marie’s broken heart longed to be reunited with him. Their love story now continues beyond this earthly realm, where they are finally together once again. Although she was known by many as Marie, to her beloved family she was “Mama.” She was the most amazing wife, mother and grandmother.

Marie had a green thumb and had a knack for growing the most beautiful flowers. She was an avid reader, loved puzzles and was an excellent cook. She could whip up the most delicious desserts, such as her famous banana cookies. Her love for her family was as comforting as the coffee she would brew and the cookie she would split with you. She had a witty sense of humor and the best laugh. Her family will hold onto the sweet memories of all the great conversations, laughs and memories shared outside on the patio or around the kitchen table.

Marie is survived by her two sons, Carmen Gutta Jr. (Karen) and Scott Gutta (Shelley); six grandchildren, Kayla Gutta Cook (Zach), Lindsay Gutta Reed (Zach), Carmen A. Gutta III (Jessica), Taylor Gutta Stark (Luke), Bradley Gutta and Caitlin Gutta; and six great-grandchildren, Landon Cook, Peyton Cook, Camryn Cook, Tripp Reed, Rhett Reed and Wyatt Stark. She is also survived by two sisters, Martha Craft and JoAnn Kun; and brother, Melvin Dawson.

In addition to her husband, Carmen Gutta Sr., and her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her infant son, Stephen Gutta; and siblings, Pauline Dawson Renforth and James Dawson.

Friends and family will be received at St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, One Guthrie Lane, Morgantown, from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23. Visitation will continue at the church from 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m., with Msgr. Anthony Cincinnati, STD as celebrant. Interment will take place at Lawnwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Agnes Marie Gutta to St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church, One Guthrie Lane, Morgantown, WV 26508.

Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
